Definition
Apartment pre-approval is not a formal step the way mortgage pre-approval is: most landlords approve or deny one application at a time, after checking income, credit, rental history and identity. Some landlords and listing sites offer pre-screening or a reusable rental profile, but the closest thing to being pre-approved is a complete packet ready on day one: proof of income of about 2.5 to 3 times the rent, photo ID, your own recent credit report and a past landlord's reference.
Short answer
How do you get approved for an apartment?
Most landlords check three things: income (often a gross monthly income of about 2.5 to 3 times the rent), credit and rental history, and identity. To get approved, pull your own credit report first. Then have two recent pay stubs or an offer letter, two months of bank statements, photo ID and a past landlord's contact ready, plus a short letter explaining anything that will stand out, such as thin credit, a job change or a past late payment. Apartments have no formal pre-approval, but a complete packet on day one comes closest.
